#012: Survivance : Survival, resistance and finding ways to remain true to yourself when life is trying to hold you back

Today I have the inspirational and openly honest Larry Chavis. Larry is a teaching professor at the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School. He has a very special gift that his students actively share about his ability to make economics entertaining and engaging.

On top of that he is a powerful voice on campus for diversity and inclusion, he served over three years as director of the American Indian Center, and was elected to the university faculty council. Along the way, he has been honoured with two eagle feathers from North Carolina tribes for support of Native students and communities, inducted into UNC’s oldest honour society, and has a fellowship with the American Council on Education.

He is and will continue to be a source of pride for so many people in his tribe and other Natives in North Carolina.

  • Why Native Americans are often under-represented in Economics and Teaching

  • Economics needs to start to speak to a broader range of people

  • Diversity and inclusion is making progress

  • For businesses to remain relevant they need to keep up with what the next generation are pushing for
