#019 : Confidence. Standing up for yourself, the importance of being a mentor and mental health in the Tech industry

This week I share a great conversation I had with Jo Franchetti. Jo is a Developer Advocate at Spotify. She is passionate about teaching best use of the web and its technologies. She’s got 10 years experience as a front end developer and has worked in various parts of the tech industry from start-ups, agencies, charities to large organisations. She is a mentor and organiser at codebar.io and at Front End Foxes where she is able to act on her passion not only for teaching but also for improving the diversity and inclusivity of the tech industry.

What you’ll hear about:

  • The difficulties she’s faced in a male dominated industry

  • Using her frustration to build confidence to call out diversity issues

  • Asking the right questions during interviews can help get a deeper understanding of working culture

  • The diversity glass ceiling

  • The importance of mentoring

  • Don’t underestimate the importance of getting hands on experience/learning

  • Mental health concerns in the tech industry

  • The cycle and expectations of “keep working hard” and keep going creates burn-out

  • The importance of finding a company with the right culture for work to support you as an individuals

  • The stress of not being stressed
